Buying a sauna or steam room is a big decision. It involves a lot of time and research and sometimes it’s confusing to even know where to begin. That’s why we’re here to give you all the information in one place, starting with the type of heat that you like to enjoy. Once you’ve chosen that, it makes it much easier to pick a product. You’ll be relaxing in your very own haven of tranquillity before you know it.
First things first, you need to decide on the type of environment you like relaxing in. If you were going on holiday would you prefer the dry heat of a desert, like a sauna? Or more of a tropical humidity, like a steam room? Or perhaps you’d like a bit of both. The choice is yours.
The word ‘sauna’ means bath or bathhouse in Finland and is something that has been used for thousands of years. Traditionally, people would sit in a log cabin around a fire pit with rocks laid over the top and enjoy the benefits of the heat. Many saunas today still use similar methods and research shows that there are some great associated health benefits, such as a reduction in blood pressure, cardiac illnesses and stress.
The heat from a sauna is dry and intense with very low humidity. At Oceanic, we provide two types of saunas: a traditional Finnish sauna that warms the air using an electric heater and dense rocks, and an infrared sauna that heats your body directly, rather than the air around you, using infrared panels.
The infrared sauna has a lowlaider level of humidity and a maximum temperature of 60°C, which might be more tolerable if you’re sensitive to heat. Whereas a Finnish sauna has a maximum temperature of 110°C, which offers a more intense experience. Both come as wooden cabins, where you can sit or lie down on the benches inside.
Oceanic Infrared Sauna: A Complete Guide
Although humans have enjoyed the steamy properties of hot springs in caves for more than 10,000 years, the Romans are most often attributed to the sumptuous steam room. Kicking off leather sandals and resting weary feet in one used to be a part of daily life. And it’s been shown to boost circulation, improve skin health, open up sinuses and reduce stress. A steam room is essentially an airtight space where steam is pumped in to reach a capacity of around 100% humidity. The heat usually gets to around 40–50°C, which can make it a more accessible temperature than a sauna. You’ll still sweat using a steam room, but you’ll also notice the damp texture on your skin due to the humidity. At Oceanic, we provide two different types of steam room: an Oceanic Turkish Steam Room that comes with curved benches and can be designed with tiles, or an Oceanic Roman Steam Room designed with modern, acrylic panels and ergonomic seats.

Do you like the sound of all of the above? Then perhaps a saunarium is the thing for you. It sits between dry heat and intense humidity. A saunarium creates a low, gentle heat at around 60°C and acts as an extension of the sauna. That means you’ll get either a Finnish or infrared sauna with in-built steam generators to provide that soothing damp heat. You can choose to switch the humidity on and off as you please, which makes it a great choice if you’re new to the sauna experience.

Your traditional, everyday kind of sauna
A Finnish sauna is a wooden cabin that is warmed up by a heater with rocks to between 70°C and 90°C. You can add water to the rocks for a short burst of steam or add a steam generator to magically turn it into a saunarium. Ideal for those looking for a more intense heat.

Warm up with infrared panels instead of hot rocks
Powered by infrared radiation, this style heats your body without needing to warm the air around you. It’s a similar feeling to sitting in the sun on a bright summer’s day. The air reaches a maximum temperature of 60°C and uses less power than a Finnish sauna. Perfect for those wanting a more moderate heat.
