Choosing the right timber protection depends on how the sauna will be used and on the level of moisture resistance required.

At Oceanic Saunas, we use three different timber protection products for different situations:

  • Saunarium Coat for complete waterproofing inside saunariums
  • Teknos SATU SAUNAVAHA for general sauna wall, ceiling and timber protection
  • Teknos SATU LAUDESUOJA for bench protection and other high-contact timber surfaces

The most important point is this:

These products should not be layered on top of one another on the same area.
You can use different products in different parts of the same sauna, but you should not apply one over another on the same timber surface.

For example:

  • it is perfectly fine to use SATU SAUNAVAHA on the walls and ceiling
  • and SATU LAUDESUOJA on the benches and high-contact areas

But:

  • you should not apply SATU LAUDESUOJA over SATU SAUNAVAHA
  • and you should not apply SATU SAUNAVAHA over SATU LAUDESUOJA
  • and Saunarium Coat should not be used in conjunction with either of the Teknos products on the same treated area

There is no benefit in applying one product over the other. It is not necessary, and it will not work as intended.

1. Saunarium Coat

Best for: saunariums and sauna interiors where the inside of the cabin needs to be fully waterproofed.

Saunarium Coat is our specialist timber protection system for saunariums. It is used where a very high level of moisture resistance is required, helping to create a fully waterproof internal timber surface.

Why we use it

In our saunariums, where moisture exposure is much more demanding, Saunarium Coat is used to completely waterproof the inside of the sauna. This makes it the right choice where a high level of moisture exclusion is required, rather than a more traditional breathable sauna finish.

Important note

Saunarium Coat is a standalone waterproofing system. It should be used on its own and must not be overcoated or combined with SATU SAUNAVAHA or SATU LAUDESUOJA on the same area.

Key points

  • Designed as a waterproofing system
  • Suitable where maximum moisture resistance is required
  • Best reserved for saunariums or specialist high-moisture sauna interiors
  • Must be used as its own system, not mixed with other surface treatments

2. Teknos SATU SAUNAVAHA

Best for: sauna wall panels, ceiling panels and general timber areas where a breathable, attractive protective finish is wanted.

SATU SAUNAVAHA is a sauna wax designed to protect timber while allowing it to retain a natural appearance. It provides a breathable, dirt- and water-repellent finish and is well suited to a wide range of internal sauna timber surfaces.

Why choose it

SATU SAUNAVAHA is a good all-round sauna timber treatment when you want to protect the wood while preserving its natural look. It is especially useful where a softer, more traditional finished appearance is preferred over a waterproof coating system.

Typical use

  • Sauna walls
  • Sauna ceilings
  • General internal timber surfaces

Key points

  • Water-borne wax finish
  • Breathable surface treatment
  • Dirt- and water-repellent
  • Suitable for general sauna timber protection
  • Ideal where a natural timber finish is preferred

3. Teknos SATU LAUDESUOJA

Best for: sauna benches and other timber surfaces that get frequent contact and need a simple protective treatment.

SATU LAUDESUOJA is a clear timber protection treatment that helps protect the surface while maintaining the natural feel of the wood. It is particularly well suited to benches and other areas that are regularly touched or sat on.

Why choose it

This is a particularly good option for bench timber and other high-contact areas, where comfort, cleanability and a natural timber look are important.

Typical use

  • Sauna benches
  • Other high-contact timber surfaces

Key points

  • Clear protective finish
  • Dirt- and water-repellent
  • Breathable treatment
  • Especially suited to benches and contact areas
  • Helps maintain a natural timber appearance

Comparison Chart

Important: These products can be used in the same sauna on different areas, but they should not be layered over one another on the same surface. For example, you can use SATU SAUNAVAHA on the walls and ceiling, and SATU LAUDESUOJA on the benches and high-contact areas. What you should not do is apply one product over another on the same timber area.

How these products should be used together

These products can be used within the same sauna, but only when they are used on different areas.

A typical and correct approach would be:

  • SATU SAUNAVAHA on walls and ceilings
  • SATU LAUDESUOJA on benches and high-contact areas

That is a sensible combination because each product is being used where it performs best.

What should not be done is applying one product on top of the other on the same timber surface. For example:

  • do not put LAUDESUOJA over SAUNAVAHA
  • do not put SAUNAVAHA over LAUDESUOJA
  • do not use Saunarium Coat underneath or over either product

This is unnecessary and the products are not intended to work as layered coats on the same area.

Which product should be used where?

Choose Saunarium Coat when:

You need the inside of the sauna fully waterproofed and want a dedicated moisture-barrier system for a saunarium.

Choose SATU SAUNAVAHA when:

You want a general-purpose sauna timber finish for walls, ceilings and surrounding timber surfaces that protects the wood while allowing it to breathe.

Choose SATU LAUDESUOJA when:

You want a treatment focused mainly on benches and high-contact timber surfaces.

Simple recommendation for customers

  • Choose Saunarium Coat for a saunarium interior requiring full waterproofing
  • Choose SATU SAUNAVAHA for sauna walls, ceilings and general timber areas
  • Choose SATU LAUDESUOJA for benches and high-contact timber surfaces

You can use SATU SAUNAVAHA and SATU LAUDESUOJA in the same sauna, provided they are used on different areas. They should not be applied one over the other on the same surface
