Long ago, when the first saunas were built from forest timber and heated by fire, five Saunatonttu were appointed to watch over them.
Together, they formed the Saunatonttu Council, meeting whenever a sauna was built with care and used with respect.
Löyly governs the steam, ensuring it rises gently and never in anger.
Tapio guards the wood, remembering every cut, knot, and grain.
Väinö preserves tradition, reminding all who enter to slow down and listen.
Ilmar keeps the air moving, so the heat can be enjoyed without strain.
And Aarni arrives at the end, ensuring calm and recovery follow the fire.
