Running Costs

Power Consumption

How much power will my sauna require?

The power requirement will depend on size of sauna, typically 1kW per 1m3 of space for a traditional sauna. Infrared saunas are more efficient 0.5kw/m3 and steam rooms require more power 1.2-2kW/m3. When purchasing an Oceanic sauna or steam room the correct size heater or generator will be included, check the product page for details. For instance a D2020 sauna will be supplied with a 4.5kW heater.

If you are building your own sauna or steam room please see the DIY guides for more information.

How long will it take for my sauna to heat up?

Typicaly heat up time is 15-35minutes depending on ambient temperature and desired internal temperature.

How much will it cost to run my sauna?

Cost of running a sauna will depend on:

  • Size of sauna
  • Ambient Temperature
  • Preferred internal temperature
  • Length of bathing session
  • Frequency of bathing sessions
  • Price of electricity (tariff)

Example:

4.5kW sauna heater, ambient temperature 20degC, target temperature 80 degC, 90minute session twice a week, 28p per kWh.

Estimated power consumption: 8kWh per week

Estimated Cost: £2.40p / week

Note that a sauna will only run at full power during the initial heat up phase, once target temperature has been reached the elements will switch off sequentially to maintain a constant temperature.
