Roman Steam Room Buying Guide

The heady feeling and aroma of a steam room will lull you into deep relaxation before you can even say ‘spa day’. Liked by the Romans and loved by us, the humble steam room feels mighty luxurious. Our Roman steam rooms are delivered flat-packed to your door, with quick and easy installation instructions. Each one comes at a standard size that can’t be altered, so make sure to choose measurements that fit your space.

What is a Roman steam room?

Back in the days of the Roman Empire, communal baths were a key way to socialise and hang out with friends. People used to indulge in the therapeutic properties, sweating in a series of hot rooms heated by an elaborate system of furnaces. Our modern version is a lot simpler and uses a steam generator to produce the humidity, and we’ve perfected the experience with comfortable seats and smooth design. Temperatures reach around 40-60°C, which is much milder than a sauna, but any higher and the humidity would be uncomfortable.

Both Roman and Turkish steam rooms are made for relaxing. The key difference between the two is that the Roman style has a modern white interior with ergonomic seats. The Turkish style is more traditional and comes with curved benches finished in mosaic tiles.

How do you use it?

Simply turn it on and wait for the steam to fill up for around 15-20 minutes. Then, once it looks suitably humid in there, relax into one of the comfy seats and allow yourself to be absorbed in the heat.

You can choose your preferred temperature level and decide how much time you want to spend in there. If you’re new to the experience, we recommend starting at around 40°C and slowly increasing. Most people will sit inside for about 15 minutes before having a cold shower, resting for 30 minutes, and then repeating the same pattern. You can do this two or three times, so that an average session lasts about two hours.

The health benefits

People often turn to steam rooms to give their mental wellbeing, relaxation, sleep, mindfulness and immune system a boost. Research shows that as people sweat in the hammam-like conditions, it can help to remove toxins from the body and improve skin health, hydration and healing through improved circulation and increased blood flow. The heat can also help to soothe arthritis and improve cardiovascular health, while the humid air clears the sinuses and opens up the lungs to allow for easier breathing

If you are intending to use a steam room for a health condition, we recommend you consult your GP first. Please also be mindful that there are some risks associated with using a steam room, so you should make sure to stay hydrated and avoid drinking alcohol.

Not quite right for you? Choose a different product

We have lots of different styles of steam rooms and saunas. If you don’t think the Oceanic Roman Steam Room is the right choice, find something else to suit you:

Oceanic Turkish Steam Room for people who prefer traditional tiled interiors
Oceanic Finnish Sauna or Infrared Sauna if you’re looking for a dry heat
Oceanic Saunariums if you want a sauna with steam

Setting up your steam room

All of our steam rooms come flat-packed with assembly instructions. Unless you’re a dab hand at DIY, we suggest you choose a local fitter to install it. If you can’t find anyone local, we can recommend someone who is familiar with our products.

The steam generator is supplied as part of the kit and will need to be fitted by a qualified plumber and electrician. It will require hardwiring to a mains supply via an all pole isolator (not a 13amp plug). The generator needs to be installed outside the steam room and the maximum length of copper pipe that can be fitted to between the generator and the steam room is 10m.

Handy hints:

The installation checklist

Before you think about purchasing one of our saunas, you need to check that you can provide the following things:

A wetroom floor which will need to slope down to a drain in the centre. The steam room is supplied with non-slip floor mats which cover the floor area.
A connection to a cold water supply for the steam generator (max 1 bar pressure) and a waste pipe to drain into. Please see our steam generator installation manual for more details.
Minimum ceiling height of 2,000mm
A suitable power supply: an isolated 230V single phase or 400V three phase supply to the correct standard, installed by a qualified electrician

Mix and match the bits you love

Now for the fun bit. We provide ready-to-go parts in different sizes so that it’s super easy to build your dream steam room. Simply customise how you want it to look, from the room layout to the accessories, and we’ll sort the rest.

Room layout

Start by planning the layout for your steam room by choosing how many people you want to have in it, from two to 10.

The room is built with panels made from strong, high-tech acrylic, which is then finished with a special scratch-resistant material to make sure that it looks and stays sleek. The roof panels curve up in the middle so that condensation doesn’t build up in the cabin, and it can run naturally along the panels instead of dripping onto people below. And our seat panels come pre-formed and are ergonomically shaped to give maximum comfort.

Ventilation is created naturally through an air gap beneath the door and an exhaust vent in a roof panel.

Glass doors

All of our steam rooms come with a full glass door that can open either left or right. Our doors are finished with a polished chrome frame, a chrome handle, matching steam-proof hinges and a magnetic closing seal.

We leave the outside of the steam room unfinished so you can style it how you like to match your home. However, all of our steam rooms are available with optional full glass fronts made from 8mm toughened glass with a chrome frame.

Steam generator

Each steam room comes with a generator to fit, as well as a digital control system, steam inlet nozzle and glass guard. If you fancy, you can upgrade to a touchscreen keypad for extra convenience.

Lighting

As standard, our steam rooms come with IP65-rated low-voltage spotlights which create a clean white light. Once the cabin has filled up with steam the light will have a subdued and relaxing glow.

We can also provide chromotherapy lights and small LED spotlights that can be set to a single colour or left to fade through a rainbow of colours depending on your mood. You can adjust the settings with a small waterproof control button, which lights up so you can still see it even when it’s steamy.

Hydro massage shower kit

Why not add some massage therapy to your me-time with our range of water accessories. Our hydro massage shower kit includes a handheld shower, a rain shower, a thermostatic mixer and massage jets for a luxurious and invigorating full body experience.

Aromas

The beauty of a steam room is that you can add invigorating fragrances to the steam to soothe your senses and clear your head. You can do this with the Oceanic Fragrance Pump, which automatically releases perfumed concentrate into the steam. You can control the pump inside the steam room at the touch of a button.

Choose from an array of fragrances to suit your mood, including eucalyptus, lavender, orange and rosemary.

Water softener

Our water softener can help prolong the life of your generator. It’s easy to use and means that you won’t have to descale your steam room as often. It comes with a free test kit and chart to let you know how often you need to fill it up with salt.

Speakers

Want to add in a few more gadgets? If you fancy listening to some music while you kick back, we can provide waterproof bluetooth speakers that can be fitted into the ceiling panels.

Commercial Roman steam rooms

Our steam rooms for businesses are exactly like our domestic range, but they come as larger models with bigger heaters to withstand heavy duty use. Business can include these optional extras:

A 1,000mm-wide disabled access door. Please note that full glass fronts are not available with this door
An on-demand button for operating the steam
A heavy-duty steam generator for steam rooms running more than 20 hours a week. This also includes a programmable auto-descale function.
